Sino Biopharmaceutical(中国生物制药)and Boehringer Ingelheim(勃林格殷格翰)announced an option and license agreement on November 4 covering six preclinical cancer programs. Sino Biopharm will receive USD 358 million in upfront and near-term payments and may receive up to USD 7 billion in additional option, development, regulatory and commercial milestone payments.

The programs include antibody-drug conjugates and T-cell engagers. Five originated at LaNova Medicines(礼新医药), a wholly owned Sino Biopharm subsidiary, and one at Beijing Tide Pharmaceutical(北京泰德制药).

Sino Biopharm will lead early development through global Phase I clinical trials. After the agreed milestones are reached, Boehringer may exercise options to obtain exclusive development, manufacturing and commercialization rights. The proposed rights cover markets outside Greater China for four programs and worldwide rights for the other two.

Sino Biopharm is also eligible for tiered royalties on future product sales. The USD 358 million combines upfront and near-term payments. The milestone payments depend on option exercise and subsequent development, regulatory and commercial progress.

The agreement builds on an existing oncology relationship between the companies in China. For Sino Biopharm, the new collaboration provides an international development partner for a portfolio of early-stage programs. Their progress through clinical studies will determine which assets advance to the next phase.
