The next chapter for intelligent vehicles is unfolding both inside and beyond the car.

On September 22, EqualOcean(亿欧)CEO Yongping Yang moderated “The Car Is Becoming an ‘AI Machine’ Again” at S-tron Shanghai 2026, joined by Junyi Zhang, Vice President of SenseTime Group(商汤集团)and CFO & Board Director of Senseauto(绝影汽车); Long Dong, Partner at Insight Capital(见素资本); and Leshu Chen, Founder & CEO of xuance technology(旋测科技)

Two shifts stood out to us: inside the car, competition is increasingly focused on meaningful experiences and user value. Beyond it, sensing technologies, talent and manufacturing expertise developed in the automotive industry are finding applications in robotics and other autonomous equipment.

A few takeaways from the panel:

• Once the novelty fades, users are more willing to pay for genuinely differentiated experiences. Safe, reliable underlying hardware remains essential.

• A car is also “a robot operating in two-dimensional space.” Talent and engineering expertise from autonomous driving are helping support new forms of intelligent hardware.

• Opportunities extend beyond humanoid robots. Specialized outdoor equipment and industrial machinery with clear use cases and the ability to automate manual tasks also deserve attention.

These discussions reflect a broader transition among Chinese technology companies: automotive supply chains and engineering capabilities are becoming a foundation for innovation across industries. Yet technical expertise alone does not establish a viable business model. Cost, reliability and adaptation to specific use cases remain critical challenges on the path to deployment at scale.

How companies turn technological strengths into sustainable business value remains central to EqualOcean’s coverage of China’s evolving technology landscape.
