GAC Group(广汽集团)inaugurated its Cambodia knock-down assembly project on September 17, 2026, adding local production to its existing import and distribution business in the country. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Chinese Ambassador Wang Wenbin attended the ceremony at the TH Automotive Manufacturing facility in Kampong Chhnang province. GAC said the project has a designed annual capacity of approximately 10,000 vehicles.

The project divides responsibility between the Chinese automaker and its Cambodian partner, TH Group. According to GAC, TH Group handles investment, construction and vehicle assembly, while GAC supplies complete knock-down kits, technical standards and engineering support. The arrangement gives GAC a local assembly operation backed by its partner’s investment and operating resources, while maintaining a supply relationship for vehicle kits and technical expertise.

The launch extends a Southeast Asian manufacturing network already established in larger markets. GAC AION opened its Thailand factory in July 2024, and GAC announced the start of production at its Indonesian facility in June 2025. Cambodia therefore represents another country-level expansion of local assembly within an existing regional strategy.

For Cambodia, the project forms part of a broader effort to develop automotive manufacturing. According to state news agency AKP, Hun Manet said the country had 15 automotive assembly projects representing nearly USD 248 million in investment and supporting 2,774 jobs. Ten facilities were operational, two were nearing production and three remained in planning or construction. He put national annual assembly capacity at approximately 35,000 vehicles.

The prime minister also urged authorities to assess demand before approving further projects, emphasizing the survival and growth of existing factories. That qualification matters: expanding assembly capacity creates opportunities for industrial development, but a small domestic market also makes utilization and sustained sales central to commercial viability.

The GAC partnership illustrates one route for Chinese automakers to deepen their overseas presence. A local partner finances and operates the plant, while the manufacturer provides products, production requirements and technical support. This can connect an established sales business with local employment and assembly capabilities. The extent of industrial upgrading, however, will depend on how much activity develops beyond assembling imported kits, including workforce training, maintenance and local sourcing.

The next test is whether the Cambodian operation can turn its designed capacity into sustained output supported by customer demand. For GAC, the inauguration establishes another production location in Southeast Asia. Its longer-term value will depend on operating quality, sales and the development of a viable local supply and service network.
