Meituan（美团）launched commercial operations for its Shanghai West Bund drone delivery network on September 10, 2026, extending an integrated delivery model previously introduced in Shenzhen. The company also opened a route with McDonald’s（麦当劳）that it describes as China’s first dedicated to a single restaurant brand. The rollout connects several locations within an urban district, marking a step toward broader network operations rather than citywide coverage.
The network links four locations: West Bund Dream Center, the Xuhui Riverside public open space, the Nebula One building at the Model Space AI hub, and the plaza outside McDonald’s Longteng Avenue restaurant. Nearly 20 restaurant and beverage chains initially offered hundreds of items, with participating brands expected to exceed 40 by year-end, according to Meituan. The company advertises delivery in as little as 10 minutes. Couriers bring orders to docking stations, automated equipment handles loading, and customers collect their purchases at destination stations.
The operating model combines aircraft, ground infrastructure and dispatch software. Meituan’s fourth-generation drones work with its M-Port 3.0 docking stations and Yunshu M-DaaS 3 scheduling system. The company says the software supports multiple aircraft operating beyond visual line of sight and can assess abnormal conditions within 100 milliseconds. These capabilities are intended to coordinate a network of deliveries while automating more of the handoff between ground staff, aircraft and customers.
Meituan is also developing a business around supplying this infrastructure. In May, it opened recruitment for authorized drone logistics service providers across China, offering hardware, software and operating standards. That creates a potential route for expansion through local partners, although the announcement itself does not establish the profitability or operating scale of those partnerships.
International deployment is already underway. Keeta Drone, Meituan’s overseas drone delivery business, launched services at Dubai Silicon Oasis in December 2024 after working with local authorities on trials and dedicated flight routes. The project provides an example of adapting Chinese delivery technology to another jurisdiction, while also showing how closely deployment depends on local aviation authorities, infrastructure partners and permitted operating areas.
For Chinese logistics technology companies, the potential opportunity extends beyond aircraft sales to integrated delivery services and infrastructure. Shanghai adds another operating environment in which Meituan can test that proposition. Turning it into a repeatable international business will require evidence of reliable service, sufficient order density and competitive costs, alongside local regulatory approval. The next milestone is whether these networks can expand while maintaining safety and service quality at sustainable operating costs.
