EHang Holdings (亿航智能) and Sri Lanka’s Civil Aviation Authority have held technical discussions on the possible introduction of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, or eVTOLs, into the country’s aviation system.

The discussions focused on the regulatory and operational steps needed to assess the safe integration of pilotless eVTOL aircraft in Sri Lanka. Authorities and EHang also discussed the potential use of a regulatory sandbox to support research, demonstrations and test operations before any future commercial deployment.

The engagement does not represent a commercial launch, operating license or confirmed aircraft deployment. Neither EHang nor Sri Lanka’s aviation authorities have publicly announced a commercial-service timetable, a designated operating site, aircraft order, or approval for passenger-carrying operations.

EHang presented its pilotless eVTOL technology and international operating experience during the discussions, including the EH216-S aircraft’s airworthiness milestones in China. Those Chinese certifications do not automatically authorize operations in Sri Lanka, where local regulatory review, operational validation and safety approvals would still be required.

Potential applications discussed for eVTOL technology may include tourism, urban transport links and logistics. However, any such use cases remain at the exploration stage until Sri Lankan authorities establish applicable rules, approve trial operations and determine the requirements for commercial service.

Sri Lanka’s interest reflects the broader effort by emerging aviation markets to evaluate advanced air mobility technologies. For EHang, the next meaningful milestones will be a formal regulatory framework, approved test flights, local operating partners and evidence that pilotless eVTOL services can meet safety and commercial requirements in the local market.
