Wantai BioPharm (万泰生物) announced on Aug. 11 that the nine-valent HPV vaccine developed by its wholly owned subsidiary, Xiamen Innovax Biotech (万泰沧海), has received marketing authorization from Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration. The approval marks the vaccine’s first clearance outside China and an important step in Wantai BioPharm’s international expansion.

The vaccine was independently developed by Xiamen Innovax Biotech and is designed to protect against nine types of human papillomavirus associated with cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases. Compared with the company’s earlier bivalent vaccine, the nine-valent product provides broader protection and allows Wantai BioPharm to enter a higher-value segment of the global HPV vaccine market.

Thailand represents an important entry point into Southeast Asia, where cervical cancer prevention remains a major public-health priority. Obtaining local authorization also provides Wantai BioPharm with its first overseas regulatory reference for the nine-valent vaccine, potentially supporting future applications in other regional markets, although each country maintains its own approval requirements.

Wantai BioPharm has previously expanded internationally through its bivalent HPV vaccine. The Thai approval indicates that its overseas portfolio is beginning to move from lower-valent products toward the more advanced nine-valent category. It also marks the first approval of a Chinese-developed nine-valent HPV vaccine in Southeast Asia, according to Chinese media reports.

For China’s vaccine industry, the approval reflects a broader shift from supplying affordable alternatives toward competing in higher-value product categories traditionally dominated by multinational pharmaceutical companies. The next test for Wantai BioPharm will be whether regulatory approval can translate into local procurement, distribution and vaccination demand, turning its first overseas license into sustained commercial growth.
