Apple is reportedly testing DRAM chips made by ChangXin Memory Technologies (长鑫存储, CXMT) for possible use in iPhones and Mac computers sold in China, as the company looks for additional memory suppliers amid a global supply squeeze.

The reported testing does not mean Apple has approved CXMT for volume production or signed a supply agreement. It indicates that CXMT’s products are undergoing qualification, a technical process that can precede commercial sourcing but does not guarantee it.

Apple has been in discussions with CXMT and Yangtze Memory Technologies (长江存储, YMTC) about memory sourcing, according to media reports. The effort comes as AI data-center demand has tightened supplies of conventional DRAM and driven up memory costs for consumer-electronics manufacturers.

CXMT is China’s leading DRAM producer. The company designs and manufactures dynamic random-access memory chips, a category dominated globally by Samsung Electronics, SK hynix and Micron Technology. For Apple, qualifying another supplier could provide greater flexibility in future procurement negotiations and help reduce exposure to volatile memory pricing.

The prospect is also politically sensitive. CXMT has been placed on a U.S. Defense Department list of companies alleged to have links to China’s military. Reports have said Apple has sought assurances from U.S. officials over the potential use of CXMT products. However, being included on that Defense Department list does not itself amount to a blanket prohibition on ordinary commercial purchases.

Other PC makers have also explored Chinese memory supplies. Earlier reports said HP and Dell were qualifying CXMT products, while Acer and Asus were considering Chinese-made memory for some projects. Those reported qualification efforts should not be treated as confirmed large-scale procurement.

If Apple ultimately adopts CXMT chips, particularly in devices sold in China, it would mark a meaningful validation of the Chinese company’s commercial capabilities. But the outcome remains uncertain: Apple would still need to complete its technical qualification process, secure dependable supply, and navigate U.S. political scrutiny before any volume deployment could begin.
