On June 2, autonomous driving company WeRide (文远知行) and international mobility platform Uber announced plans to launch the first commercialized Robotaxi pilot service in Madrid, Spain. This marks the first joint entry into the European market for WeRide (文远知行) and Uber, with Madrid becoming the twelfth city globally to deploy WeRide's (文远知行) Robotaxis.

Under the planning supported by the Community of Madrid, the commercialized Robotaxi service will officially launch within this year, allowing users to hail WeRide (文远知行) Robotaxis directly via the Uber App. During the initial phase of operations, vehicles will be equipped with professionally trained safety drivers. Following the attainment of key operational milestones, WeRide (文远知行), AVOMO, and Uber plan to deploy hundreds of additional Robotaxis, progressively advancing toward fully driverless commercial operations across core urban areas of Madrid.

This partnership extends the collaboration model established between WeRide (文远知行) and Uber in the Middle East market. Currently, the two companies are conducting fully driverless Robotaxi commercial operations in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with services in Riyadh also expected to go live. According to their previous roadmap, the partners intend to deploy Robotaxi services in 15 additional international cities globally over the next five years. With the Madrid project finalized, they have completed deployments across 4 cities, with the remaining 11 cities projected for successive coverage by 2030.

Notably, the Madrid project reflects WeRide's (文远知行) asset-light internationalization strategy. WeRide (文远知行) is responsible for delivering the autonomous driving technology, while fleet operations will be managed by AVOMO, a subsidiary of Moove Cars Group. AVOMO also serves as Uber's fleet operations partner in Atlanta and Austin in the United States.

WeRide (文远知行) stated that by relying on its universal technology platform WeRide One and universal simulation platform WeRide GENESIS, the company aims to rapidly replicate its overseas market experience across more countries and regions. With Spain becoming its fifth European market, WeRide (文远知行) is further expanding its footprint within the European Robotaxi market.
