On April 16, Stripe, a global provider of payment services and financial infrastructure, announced in Shanghai that it has further deepened its global cooperation with Tencent.

WeChat Pay will be fully integrated with Stripe Terminal in 20 countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and Italy. Enterprises supported by Stripe will be able to seamlessly access WeChat Pay online. Meanwhile, they can also achieve offline payment collection through Stripe Terminal.

WeChat Pay was launched in 2013. It is a CNY-denominated electronic wallet integrated within WeChat, a comprehensive lifestyle platform under Tencent. According to the latest data of the WeChat ecosystem, as of 2025, WeChat's global monthly active users (MAU) have exceeded 1.3 billion.

Stripe was founded in 2009 by Irish brothers Patrick and John Collison. It focuses on addressing the technical pain points of online payments. In 2011, it received USD 2 million (CNY 14.62 million) in seed funding from institutions such as Sequoia Capital. In April 2025, Stripe obtained a payment license from the state of Georgia through its subsidiary Stripe Bank. Its latest valuation exceeds USD 90 billion.

The cooperation between WeChat Pay and Stripe dates back to 2017. With this deepened cooperation, WeChat Pay is more precisely targeting Chinese users traveling abroad from mainland China.

Specifically, merchants can collect payments using Stripe Terminal, and consumers can conveniently make payments by scanning codes. Stripe's integrated payment solution, which integrates payment data from all sales channels into a single dashboard, can help merchants comprehensively understand both online and offline payment situations. This, in turn, enables them to optimize the customer experience and increase revenue opportunities.
