On May 23, Huawei officially announced the launch of "Huawei Cloud Egypt, the first public cloud in North Africa!" The 2024 Huawei Cloud Egypt Launch Summit was successfully held in Cairo, the capital of Egypt. Huawei has established a cloud service node in Cairo, making it the first global company to offer public cloud services in Egypt.
The new Huawei Egypt Public Cloud initiative follows the innovative Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT Developer Preview Beta program. Establishing the cloud service node in Cairo is a significant step in Huawei's global strategy. Currently, Huawei Cloud has expanded to 93 availability zones in 33 regions worldwide, making it one of the fastest-growing mainstream cloud providers globally. Following last year's successful establishment of a cloud service node in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the opening of the Egypt node further solidifies Huawei Cloud's market position in North Africa and the Arabic-speaking world, providing strong support for accelerating digital transformation in the local industry.
Huawei has announced an investment of $300 million over the next five years to support digital development in the North African market. The Cairo node will offer over 200 cloud services, including AI platforms, data platforms, and development platforms, empowering local software and channel partners to jointly create a thriving local software and application ecosystem. Additionally, Huawei plans to train 10,000 local developers and 100,000 digital professionals over the next five years, providing strong talent support for the region's intelligent transformation.
According to the Middle East and North Africa Cloud Alliance's 2023 Cloud Competitiveness Index (CCI2023), Egypt ranks ninth among 15 regional cloud markets. CCI2023 aims to provide an overview of the current and future cloud computing market in the Middle East and North Africa, measuring the competitiveness of the cloud computing ecosystems in 15 countries/regions across five domains: regulation, talent, connectivity, government, and commercial adoption of cloud computing.
Egypt's ICT 2030 strategy clearly identifies cloud computing development as a key initiative. In 2020, Egypt enacted Personal Data Protection Law No. 151 and established the Personal Data Protection Center as the regulatory authority. Although Egypt's government cloud strategy (EG-Cloud) was introduced in 2014 and includes a cloud-first policy, formal policies are yet to be implemented.
