Revealing the invisible to machines with neuromorphic vision systems

On December 9-11, 2020, EqualOcean will host this year's World Innovators Meet (WIM). WIM2020 will take on a bolder stance and adopt a more global outlook by taking the form of an online conference that will be streamed simultaneously in all countries and regions that champion the realm of technology and innovation.

During the World Innovators Meet, the WIM Committee will release the annual blockbuster WIA list, the World Innovation Awards, based on our annual industry and investment research findings, together with a series of research reports.

We are delighted to announce Luca Verre, Co-Founder and CEO of Prophesee. Formerly known as Chronocam, Prophesee is the inventor of the world’s most advanced neuromorphic vision systems.

Luca is a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer with extensive international management experience in the automotive and electronics sector. Prior to his entrepreneurial success, Luca obtained a double first class in his Master’s in  Physics and Electrical Engineering and Industrial Engineering from Politecnico di Milano and Ecole Centrale respectively. In 2014, he received his MBA from INSEAD, specializing in General Management, Entrepreneurship, Strategy and Marketing. He began working as a Research Assistant in Photonics at the Imperial College of London and as an engineer with Toyota and Atlis Semiconductor. He then spent nearly seven years at Schneider Electric, working in marketing, business development, project and product management. In 2014, Luca co-founded Chronocam, where he served as Chief Executive Officer since 2014.

Luca’s Prophesee uses a patented technology with sensor design and AI algorithms which is inspired by human vision, revealing what was invisible until now and unleashing new safety standards and autonomy to cars, robots and mobile services - “At the heart of Prophesee's innovation is a revolutionary technology that mimics the eye and the human brain to allow machines to see what was previously invisible to them, making human-machine interactions more efficient, more reliable and safer than ever,” Luca explained.

It is estimated that the overall industrial image processing market will reach 12 billion USD by 2023; experts say that such developments imply a growing need for quality inspection and automation in production processes, therefore it is likely we will see increased demand for integrated industrial vision systems of artificial intelligence. Luca’s Prophesee have developed solutions designed to speed up production lines and quality controls, improving the monitoring of equipment in a predictive maintenance objective, creating a safer and efficient collaboration between labor and machinery.

We will be honored to have Luca Verre join EqualOcean at the 2020 World Innovators Meet, on 9 December 2020, to share his renowned expertise on “Revealing the invisible to machines with neuromorphic vision systems”

NEUROMORPHIC VISION SYSTEMS

Since their inception 150 years ago, all conventional video tools have represented motion by capturing a number of still frames each second. Displayed rapidly, such images create an illusion of continuous movement. From the flip book to the movie camera, the illusion became more convincing but its basic structure never really changed.

For a computer, this representation of motion is of little use. The camera is blind between each frame, losing information on moving objects. Even when the camera is recording, each of its “snapshot” images contains no information about the motion of elements in the scene. Worse still, within each image, the same irrelevant background objects are repeatedly recorded, generating excessive unhelpful data.

Evolution developed an elegant solution so that natural vision never encounters these problems. It doesn’t take frames. Cells in our eyes report back to the brain when they detect a change in the scene – an event. If nothing changes, the cell doesn’t report anything. The more an object moves, the more our eye and brain sample it.

This is the founding principle behind Event-Based Vision – independent receptors collecting all the essential information, and nothing else.

Discover how a new bio-inspired Machine Vision category is transforming Industry 4.0, Consumer and Automotive markets.
